Fashion Faces Tutorial 1: Drawing Front View Female

Today we will dive into how to draw a cool fashion head.
Although the clothes on the figure are the main element in the fashion illustration, the head can give that twist we need to make our illustration stand out.

Find below my process:

  • Begin drawing an oval.
  • Track a vertical line in the middle.
  • Now three lines horizontally:
    the eyes line
    the nose line
    the mouth line
  • Start shaping the face
  • Add ears from the nose line to the eyes line
  • Sketch the eyebrows, the bottom of the nose, the eyes and the mouth
  • Now add some glamours fashion features, thinking about makeup and the feeling you want to obtain. Is she a boss girl? A model? Think about her personality and make it alive.

Now my last, but maybe most important tip: exercise a lot and learn perfectly how to draw fashion heads with a classic style.
Once you master the basics, you will be able to find your personal style

Clip Studio Paint Animation: how to import a sequence of images on the timeline

Hi fashion lovers! In this video, I am going to show you how I create a simple animation importing a series of png. This is also useful if you want to use some images as a reference for your animation.

Before we start I just want to tell you that if you like this video, please, like it and share it on social media. Or make a photo with your phone and put it on your Instagram stories. Don´t forget to tag me so I can share it on my stories as well. And, of course, if you are passionate about fashion illustration or digital illustration, subscribe to my channel to not miss anything! I publish a new video every Thursday!

But let´s start with this animation. First of all, we need to create a new file. On the side where is the Layer window, you can see the folder where I want to import all my images. All you have to do is to drag the images into the folder. Don´t worry: you´ll not see them immediately on the timeline.

Now, go to the timeline and rename the animation folder: I will call it Girl Animation.

Now go to the timeline and right-click on the first frame.
Select the name of the first images that you want to appear and here there is! You can see it :)
Finally, I am going to do the same for all the other images.

Delete the white background and it´s done!

If you enjoy this post, please be sure to take a screenshot and share it out on Instagram and tag me @manuela_desimone and I’ll be sure to share it on my Instagram Stories as well.

How to draw the Teddy Coat

Must-have of the season? With no doubt the Teddy Coat. Just a few days ago on Cosmopolitan Italia, I was reading an article about it: one of my favorite enveloping fuzzy coat to wear is the one by Bershka. You know that I have a passion for pink, right?

In the video, you can see how I create the coat in Manuela´s style, with the addition of a maxi-scarf (in Berlin we don't mess with the cold!). As always, you will find a list of the tools I use at the end of this post and, below, the description step-by-step:

  • After creating a rough sketch with the pencil tool I want to start with the coat.

+TIP+
In the past, sometimes I found my illustration out of topic.
I found myself starting with an initial idea (a peace to wear since we are talking about fashion illustration) and I ended up putting the main focus on some other aspects of the drawing (like, for instance, the model, the hair, etc).
I learned that in order to avoid a lack of focus it is always a good idea to start drawing and coloring what should be the main subject!

  • Using the Fluff Fur Brush I start adding color to the coat.
The brush has not full coverage so, I make more than one brushstroke where I need more color density.
  • Using the G-Pen Brush of Clip Studio Paint I trace the outline of the scarf in black on a vector layer
  • I create a new raster layer and, using the scarf vector layer as a reference layer, I fill it with black.
  • I create a new raster layer for the lights and using the white I start adding them.
  • Now I focus on the face and I start inking with the G-Pen on the vector layer.
  • Then, I start with the flat colors on the lips, the eyes and the hair and I add shadows and lights.
  • Using the black G-Pen I add some rebel hair around her face. As I already mentioned in my previous posts, I love this moment because the face gets an ultra-feminine and sexy look
  • Using the Droplet brush I add ink spots in the background
  • To make it shine, I also use the Sparkle A and Sparkle B brushes on the coat
  • Using the "correct line" tool I increase the size of the outlines where I feel that the figure needs more strength
  • I create a new raster layer and set it as "multiply". This one is for the shadows and using a dark red I start adding them.
  • I add more lines to the vector layer for the fur. I want them to be really free, this is why I put the brush stabilizer to 0.
  • Since I am not satisfied with the eyes I start over again. The same process as I used earlier using the dense watercolor brush, flat color, shadows, and lights. I use the same brush to add some blush and eyeshadow.
  • Final step: some shadows to the face using the violet.

  • Using the Spray brush first and the Droplet than (in white) I add the glitter effect to the dress.
  • To make it shine, I also use the Sparkle A and Sparkle B brushes
  • I create a new raster layer for the lights and using the white I start adding them.
  • I add some shadow also to the gloves using a magenta color.
  • Now I focus on the face and I start coloring the eyes. I want them to be hazel/gold. I start with the flat color and I start adding shadows with a dark brown and lights with a light yellow (almost white)
  • I use the same process for the lips but using a dark red for the shadows and white for the lights
  • Using the black G-Pen I add some rebel hair around her face. I love this moment because the face gets an ultra-feminine and sexy look
  • Using the "correct line" tool I increase the size of the outlines where I feel that the figure needs more strength
  • Using the Droplet brush I add ink spots in the background
  • Using the Rough Wash brush I add the red color splash on her cheeks and then I use the blending brush to smooth them
  • Last touch: some shadows on her eyelids for an intense look!

How to create a digital Beauty Illustration: MAC Kiss of Stars Lipstick

https://youtu.be/XDPtGup_3fU

Today we're going to dive into how I create a beauty illustration using the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 and Clip Studio Paint Ex.

Many of you ask me about my creative process and I thought that it could be useful to add a written step-by-step- guide to this video here on my Blog. So don´t forget to sign up for the newsletter (on the right side of this article) to do not miss anything!

Here is my process:

  • Look for reference images. In this case, I already knew that I wanted to illustrate the MAC Kiss of Stars Lipstick so I just had to find a really clear image of it.
  • Using the G-Pen Brush of Clip Studio Paint I trace the outline in black on a vector layer
  • I create a new raster layer and, using the vector layer as a reference layer, I start adding flat colors.
  • I create a new raster layer for the lights and using the white I start adding them.
  • I create a new raster layer and set it as "multiply". This one is for the shadows and using a violet dark tone I start adding them.
  • I create the stars using the Star brush. Locking the transparent pixel, I color the stars. I add some details with the G-Pen.
  • On a new layer, I add some sparkles with the Glitter Circle Cross brush.
  • Using the Bloodstain brush I add the black color splash on the background

Et voilà. The illustration is done!

Let's celebrate Love!

*post in italiano dopo quello inglese

It's Valentine's Day!
What better occasion to show you the newest illustration part of the new latest dedicated to sweets?
In addition to a delicious hearts covered cupcake, you can see the model wearing a wonderful dress by Giambattista Valli's spring couture collection 2019.

But it is not the only news: in a few days you can buy in my shop the print of this illustration but …. drum roll …. you can also buy the original pencil drawing!

So let's celebrate Love!

And for love, I mean not only the relationship between two people, but also the love for our mother earth, for nature and, above all, for ourselves.

In a few words … the Universal Love.

Within our busy and stressful lives, it has become difficult to find the time to do something that really makes us happy.
It is a consideration that it anything but trivial: for example, many people are so in deep in their work/relationships/children or other stuff that they can not answer to an apparently simple question:

What makes you REALLY HAPPY?

I wait for your answers in the comments to this post!

ps: do not miss any updates, subscribe to the newsletter and follow me on Instagram!

E' San Valentino!

Unique Beauty From Inside Out

*post in italiano dopo quello inglese

UNIQUE BEAUTY FROM INSIDE OUT with Lee Alexander McQueen is the last flash mob of 2018 by @theUNIQUEillustration

When I first read the theme of this flash mob I got excited: Alexander McQueen has always been an immense source of inspiration for me. I love his visions and, although the dark atmosphere does not reflect me very much, I have always been attracted by his ability to tell charming stories through his creations.

For this illustration, I was inspired by the exhibition Savage Beauty, held for the first time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2011 and later in 2015, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
I wanted to represent the wild and primordial beauty seen as an element inextricably linked to nature, in the form of an ethereal and delicate female creature like a flower but strong and passionate like the wonderful dress I wanted to illustrate. All surrounded by the dark atmosphere typical of McQueen.

To be honest, I had some difficulty in representing what I wanted: as I said, I'm not used to representing dark atmospheres and it took me a while to find the right color palette and the right balance between Manuela De Simone and Alexander McQueen! (you know, my name next to his makes a strange effect!)

The Savage Beauty print will soon be available in my online shop!

UNIQUE BEAUTY FROM INSIDE OUT con Lee Alexander McQueen è l'ultimo flash mob del 2018 by @theUNIQUEillustration

Autumn Inspired Illustrations

With the arrival of September, the colors here in Berlin have changed, and a marvelous palette of browns has painted the city. Impossible not to be inspired and a series of portraits I had made when I was still living in Rome came back to mind. It was as if those drawings had been there waiting for the perfect moment to be completed, during a wonderful Berliner September.

Scroll down to see more :)

Snow White in Paolo Sebastian

Today I want to share with you an illustration a bit 'different from my usual.
Every last day of the month I participate in the open call of the group of artists I belong to.
"Fairy tales" was the theme for August, and I wanted to create an illustration that I would have liked to see in a book when I was a child. Snow White in a fabulous fashion dress: that's because my passion for haute couture goes back to a long time ago... maybe is it for my Italian blood? The dress in question is by Paolo Sebastian, who collaborated with Disney for the creation of a breathtaking collection inspired by Disney princesses.

Valentino - Draw a Dot Open Call

*post in italiano dopo quello inglese

I am so happy to share with you this illustration today. This was my first time in taking part in a Draw A Dot open call and I am thrilled to be one of the nine illustrators selected! I was really inspired by the theme, Valentino's latest runway, and it was really hard to choose a look because they were all amazing!

For those who don't know, Draw A Dot is a website, as well as an Instagram influencer, dedicated to fashion, character and surreal illustration. The goal is to share the works of the best illustrators on the web.

I particularly like the concept behind the name chosen for this project. The website's claim says:
We all start out with just a dot, then we connect all the dots together to create a beautiful image.

The illustration I made is reach in details: it was very relaxing to draw all the orchids, so much that I decided to practice more with botanical illustration. Those who follow my stories on Instagram should have seen me struggling with a rose in the latest days!

As always, I worked with my Cintiq 13 HD and Clip Studio Paint.

You can find out more about my works on my Instagram account, where I regular post updates from my studio. Thank you so much for your support!

xo

Portrait of a Fashion Icon: Audrey Hepburn

What do you think when someone says "Old Hollywood"?

My answer is Audrey Hepburn!

Ok, but let's begin from the start because there is a common thread through this 2018: a certain thing for elegance and simplicity.

2018 started with Audrey Hepburn: on December 31st at midnight Corrado and I, four months pregnant, were on the sofa watching Breakfast at Tiffany's. A beautiful New Year Eve in all its simplicity spent talking about projects, dreams, and good purpose.Read more

Studio tour and a new fashion illustration

*post in italiano dopo quello inglese

I finally got time to hang some prints on the wall of my little creative corner/studio.
We are in this house since December: this was the third moving in the last year, and I had some problems with feeling this place "home".
It is one of the cons of moving to another country: it takes quite a lot of time to settle. Finally, I decided to personalize the space with some illustrations of mine, and I also bought a big collage-photo-frame for our family pictures.
In the end, my home is where Corrado and Charlotte May are ❤

But today, I also want to share with you a quick illustration I've done lately.
A few days ago I saw one of my favorite fashion icons, Chiara Ferragni in this cute Majorelle dress by REVOLVE and I loved it!

You know, my creations come from a deep passion ... and, while I draw them, I like to hold my sleeping baby girl tight to my chest and think that her dreams fill my heart ...
